Success 101

Success seems to be largely a matter of
hanging on after others have let go.”
~William Feather~

I’ve been having one of those days.  Maybe you can relate.  It really started yesterday afternoon and went late into the evening, when feeling a bit like a dog with a bone, I made myself quit working and watch a little TV before getting ready for bed.  This morning I felt rested and ready to go again.

Having bought some software which is supposed to make quick work of blog creation, I installed it and tried to get it to work.  That’s when I stepped into the quagmire.  It’s never a good sign when I find myself reading “foreign” language (read “technospeak”) in the instructions.  And the references to “code” made my blood run cold.

Whoever said “Code is poetry,” is a delusional in my book.  It should say, “Code is the handiwork of the devil.”

Bear in mind that I was an English major where I learned that language is metaphorical and has many shades of meaning.  Usually a beautiful thing.  And since then I have lived in the world of psychology, which while it has some hard science as a part of it, the practice of which is also metaphorical and has many shades of meaning.

If you are younger than I am (and you probably are) and have been a world citizen in the 21st century, you likely know that computer code is not metaphorical, nor does it have many shades of meaning.  It is an exacting, cruel and hard-bitten thing that demands compliance or your technical wish will certainly not be your command.

After more time passed than I care to think about, I gave up trying to guess what in the heck was required, and shut down the computer.  As I left to meet a friend for lunch, I got what I thought might be Divine Inspiration…an idea of what I needed to do to get unstuck.  Back from lunch, I started again.  Turns out the inspiration wasn’t the magic bullet, but it got me closer to the answer.

I did make some progress, and got to another fork in the technical road and decided to stop and do something else on my to do list that I know I can manage.  To say that I am challenged is an understatement.  I’d better be developing new brain cells, or I’m going to be really annoyed!

So why am I telling you this?

Because I think my experience is representative of the process of reaching goals, and in a larger sense, making the life changes we desire.  We often hear about so-and-so being “An Overnight Success!”  The reality is almost always the opposite.  The world may become aware of so-and-so overnight (electronic media being what it is) but if you care to ask, that successful person has been trudging on, working consistently in the trenches, dealing with frustrations and doubts and even failures, working through obstacles until their intentions begin to take form.  As they continue working, they gain momentum until they reach a tipping point.  And viola`, an “overnight sensation!”

Although you may think that successful people are smarter or luckier than average, it is much more likely that the successful are tenacious.  They persist in imagining and working every day toward the fulfillment of their dreams.  When they fall down, they get back up and start over.  And when they get lost, they ask for help, buy a compass and map and get back on the road.

Most failure probably isn’t because of laziness or stupidity.  It’s likely a matter of giving up.  That’s easy to do when you are discouraged or frustrated or overwhelmed.  If you find yourself in this camp, it’s never too late to start over.  Find inspiration by talking to or reading the work of someone who has succeeded or is farther along than you are.

Hire a coach; often you can cut costs by getting into a coaching group.  Join a group of people who are in the field you want to achieve in.  Buy a hypnosis DVD that is professionally produced by experienced psychologists to build your resilience and remove the obstacles that frustrate you.

Rather than abandoning your dreams, get some help and get back on track.  It’s all a part of your road to success!

Have You Tried Hypnosis Yet?

Most of us encounter some knotty problems when we are working on a major goal.  In fact, if you never feel overwhelmed or daunted by the goal, it isn’t big enough!  Being of two minds, feeling a strong desire, and at the same time, some disbelief or resistance to really accomplishing your goal is a natural part of the change process.

Hypnosis is a great tool that can help you achieve challenging goals.  Need to stop smoking?  Hypnosis is an effective way to conquer your bad habit.  Weight loss hypnosis is popular for good reason.  Assistance in sleeping better, reducing anxiety or panic attacks, improving job or sports performance is well established.

All over the world, medical and mental health professionals help their clients by using hypnosis to aid in relaxation and stress reduction.  They assist in developing positive new habits and mindsets, manage anxiety and depression, control pain (both chronic pain and the pain of medical treatments), and to speed healing.  Athletes are using hypnosis very effectively to improve their mental focus and performances.

What is hypnosis?  Essentially it combines deep relaxation with a focused mind, and is a method that accesses the unconscious by quieting the thinking or rational mind.  This trance like state is probably familiar to you, although you may not be aware of it.  Have you ever driven some place familiar, and after arriving can’t remember any details of your trip?  You were likely focused on something else entirely while some other part of your brain took care of the driving.

While being hypnotized, you may not remember any of the session or what occurred.  More frequently, you will experience it in a way similar to being very focused on reading a book.  You will be relaxed, but aware of what is being said to you and to your thought processes, although they may seem muted.  Essentially no one can make you say or do or think anything that you would object to.  All hypnosis is really self hypnosis.

In other words, the communication between your conscious and unconscious mind will be congruous with who you are and what you value.  Hypnosis is effective because it accesses the more powerful unconscious mind and allows you to “program” yourself to function in new and better ways.  Anyone who is capable of relaxing and capable of focusing their attention is able to use hypnosis.

When hypnosis was approved by the AMA and the British Medical Association in the late 1950’s as an effective tool for medical and psychological treatment, they of course stipulated that it should be used by licensed, qualified professionals.  When you work face-to-face with someone, you will need to check out their credentials.  And when you use recorded sessions, be sure that they are done by credentialed specialists.

The Hypnosis Network is a resource that I have personally used over time and frequently recommend.  You can check out their information and products here: http://www.hypnosisnetwork.com/. They are a company with credibility and some very impressive endorsements.  When you check out the list of products, you will most likely find one that will give you a big boost on the way to achieving your goals.

Beautiful Dreamer

“Within your heart, keep one still, secret spot where dreams may go.”

~Louise Driscoll~

It’s easy to discount the importance of dreaming.  Often the gap between our reality and our dreams seems so big that dreaming is relegated to fantasy.  Messages from our well-intentioned elders may leave a strong imprint that dreaming is foolishness.

But I want to suggest that your dreams are a guide to your authentic life.  Both your day dreams and the night-time variety are messages from your unconscious mind that provide clues to what really matters to you.  And listening to them can provide a treasure map to a richer life.

Here are some suggestions to help you tune in and to bring those dreams to fruition.

  • Keep a dream journal.  Write your day dreams in it and also practice recalling the dreams from your sleeping time.  If you jot down the words and images that remain with you right after you wake up, you will soon train yourself to recall more.
  • Draw or cut out pictures that “grab” you emotionally.  You will have to hush your Inner Critic when it tells you that you can’t draw.  Drawing dream images and looking at them can be inspiring and motivating, even when you don’t understand them intellectually.
  • Use a glue stick to put the images on poster board or put them in a frame and hang them up.
  • You will soon notice some negative self talk and emotions coming up.  Fear or anger announces a resistance to having what you want.  This may seem crazy to you, but if you weren’t resisting, you would already have what you are dreaming, wouldn’t you?
  • Use your journal to note what these negative statements are.  Even though it is a contradiction, writing them will clarify them.
  • Use EFT or Meridian Tapping to reduce your tension, fear or anger.  It is a terrific tool to remove old beliefs that are blocking you.  You can access it here:  http://tinyurl.com/yeh2fwj

Remember that what pops up in your daydreams and your night-time dreaming are messages from your unconscious mind, and that they come in the interest of your health and healing.  Even when they are uncomfortable and frightening, if you work with them, they will light your way to a more fulfilling life.  If you want help in working with them, contact a psychotherapist who is experienced in dream work.  Doing so is interesting, fun and very rewarding.

Releasing Regret

“The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago.  The second best time is now.”       ~African Proverb~

Did you ever have one of those times when you’re wistfully thinking “If only…” ?  As in, if only I had majored in something else, or if only I had gone to college, or if only I had worked harder, or not married that man/woman, or saved more money, etc., etc.?  The fodder of sleepless nights for many people.

Looking back with regret may be common, but like worrying about the future, a complete waste of time and energy.  As the years pass, it seems to be an increasing hazard to your sense of well-being.

Listening to an interview on the Tapping membership site, I was reminded of an element of EFT that has impressed me before.  EFT or Meridian Tapping, usually begins with a statement something like this:  Even though I feel regret (or embarrassment or anger, or whatever emotion you are aware of) about losing that job (or whatever the situation is), I completely love and accept myself.  Or, I completely accept my feelings about ____.

At first this statement seems so paradoxical as to be ridiculous!  Accept that you are feeling lousy?  Accept yourself despite the belief that you really screwed something up?

Paradoxical yes.  And also very powerful.  Most of us who have learned to be judgmental of ourselves (and of others, by the way) seem to believe that acceptance will lead to ruin.  We must hold our feet to the fire if we are to see the error of our ways and improve.

However, we understand psychologically that what we resist persists (thanks, C.C.Jung).  Meaning that qualities that we deny or refuse to accept will persist in us just as strongly as we resist them.  It is this refusal to face and accept our “shadow” (disowned) qualities, that Jung believed to be true evil.  Not the quality, but the refusal to accept it.

So when we use a technique such as Meridian Tapping and we allow or accept that we feel what we feel about doing what we did, we can begin to release it.  We can release those limiting beliefs about ourselves and get on with doing those things in life that up to this point, we have not allowed ourselves to do.

True, you did not plant the tree twenty years ago, but you can free yourself to plant it now.  If you allow yourself to be truly who you are, in all your paradoxical, conflicting glory, you will be amazed at the possibilities before you.  When you eliminate your limiting beliefs, you will discover the power to plant a forest.

I

Inspired Action

My daughter has a rescued greyhound named Mudslide, who has been a part of the family for 5 years or so.  Which makes him my grand-dog.  And although he is a lovable couch potato, we are all in agreement that he is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.  And though he can run straight as a bullet on those rare and unfortunate occasions when he broke out of the open  front door, he is the most aggravating dog to take on a walk.

He looks around as he goes (is this the curse of a sight hound?) and then slowly ambles where ever he is looking.  He cannot heel to save his life, and walks in front of you, or lags behind, wandering all over the sidewalk.  Recently I observed that he walks around more like a chicken than a dog.  Not pecking the ground, mind you, but you get the drift.  Any distraction will pull him off in a new direction.  Yesterday he got hit by the baby stroller, which he was supposed to be walking beside.

It occurred to me that although I laugh at Mudslide, I can identify with him more than I care to admit.  Being distracted is the bane of my existence.  Sometimes it’s a strong emotional reaction to a life event, sometimes it’s a new idea and I am off as if following a bright, shiny object.  Maybe you recognize this quality in yourself.

Ironic that I chose to work in settings where I have to structure my own work and the activities of the day.  For years I went to an office and followed a schedule that was outlined by my employers.  Everything about it except for the therapy I did was structured by someone else.  I didn’t like it very much.  Although I must say it had its advantages.  There were a lot fewer decisions to make.  I knew where I would be every day of the week, and the hours that I would be there.

When I decided to follow my life-long desire to write, and then to publish, market information products online, my work day became my full responsibility.  Me, the woman who ambles along  more like a distracted greyhound than a speeding bullet.

We all know by now that gazing off into the distant vistas and dreaming of new destinations won’t get us where we want to be.  Yes, having a vision is important.  If you have been reading this blog for long, you know I am a fan of vision boards and connecting with the emotions of WHY you want to do, be or have something different.   But we must then take inspired action that will take us step by step along the way.

It seems to me that I need to connect with my vision every day.  And to deal with the limiting and conflicted emotions that inevitably come up every day.  Recently I listened to an interview with Jack Canfield of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series.  He said that he has been using EFT or Meridian Tapping every day for years and that he credited that for much of his success in accomplishing what he has.

That got my attention!  I am a fan of Meridian Tapping and have been using it for months now and am introducing more of my clients to it.  It is inexpensive or free, non-invasive, easy to learn and amazingly effective.  Portable, you can do it anywhere, and there seems to be no limit to the personal problems or limitations that you can address.

Yesterday I decided to take on another 30 day challenge.  And that is to use Meridian Tapping or EFT at some point in the day, every day.  In observing my thoughts and emotions during the day, I will take my cue from whatever challenge is coming up, and do a tapping session.  5, 10 or 15 minutes to clear the emotional obstacles and distractions that are coming up.

If you have some experience with tapping, I invite you to join me.  And if you would like more information, you can click on the widget at the top of this page.  Leave a comment or feel free to ask a question.  We’d like to hear about your experiences.

Amazing EFT Event Starts February 21!

I have a really important “last chance” reminder for you.  You’ve probably heard about the 2011 Tapping World Summit  by now.

Everyone is talking about it and with good reason…

This event teaches a phenomenal technique known as Emotional Freedom Techniques or “EFT” and it’s 100% available at no cost to you to attend online.

Last year 130,981 people attended this event without paying a dime and received unbelievable information.

And this year there has already been over 200,000 new people register for the event which starts on February 21st.

But that’s not what this reminder is about..

What you might not know is that because of the amazing feedback from the pre-event video series that featured Jack Canfield, Bruce Lipton and Cheryl Richardson, the producers of the event decided to do something really special.

They’re making all three videos and the remaining 7 videos in the series available for viewing or download as a special bonus for those that upgrade to the special gold or platinum access for the event before the event starts.

So let me explain what that means…

The event itself is and always will be 100% fr*ee to attend during the 10 days of the event.

The producer of the event, Nick Ortner, always stresses that this event is first and foremost a fr*ee event that also has upgrade options for those that choose it.

So here’s what an “upgrade option” means…

If you want to own the recordings, or the companion workbook, or the transcripts or any of the regular audio bonuses and the special pre-event video bonuses you’ll need to upgrade to the gold access (all digital download) or the platinum access where you get the printed workbook and 22 CD’s mailed to your door.

So what I want to remind you of today is simply about this upgrade option because of the special pre-event bonuses that disappear on the 21st…

These videos include over 7 hours of video with experts:   Jack Canfield, Bob Proctor, Bruce Lipton, Cheryl Richardson,  Joe Vitale, Dr. Joseph Mercola, Carol Look, Patricia Carrington, Carol Tuttle and Dawson Church.

They’re all extremely powerful videos that are worth watching.

And since there’s a six month money back guarantee there is zero risk involved in upgrading today.

To learn more about the this upgrade option (and to register for the event if you haven’t yet) just click on the link below:

Whether you decide to upgrade or not I want you to consider one important recommendation.  Please make sure to at least attend the event online when it starts on February 21st.  EFT is a powerful technique that can have a life-altering impact on your life but it’s up to you to show up at the event.

I look forward to seeing you there.  :)

P.S. – Here is some of the feedback from last year’s event  just to give you an idea of what people thought:

“What a wonderful ten days!  I need to tap on

withdrawals from missing the interviews.  Jessica was

a fabulous interviewer, asking just what I wanted to

know at the right time.”

-Suzanne Wright – Oregon,USA

“I hope you guys can somehow hear the thunderous

applause that is surely circling the world for you right

now.  This was a DYNAMITE event, and this grand

finale with Jessica today was just fantastic. You guys

are the absolute best, you have given phenomenal gifts

here with each presentation, and may you receive a

thousand blessings in return. EFT has never come alive

for me the way you’ve made it do in these last ten days.

I am very, very grateful, and yes, I will keep tapping and

will tell you what lights come on, what doors open in the

coming months.”?~With much love, Natasha Suter – Ithaca, New York

“This trip has been amazing. I am so thankful that you

gave me the opportunity to be a part of this, and I will

continue to tap – and maybe take an education in EFT

later on.  Fantastic.  A few weeks ago I tapped on hip

pain, and it disappeared within a couple of minutes!!

Every session have been useful to me, and I will look

more into it (I have written it all down) when I finish my

education in September. Jessica’s 40 day tapping

challenge will be done. Her “mystery bonus audio” was

a special experience.  It helped me see a lot of

experiences/feelings to tap on.”~ Merete – Bodø, Norway

“OMG! That summit was amazing! I just wanted to say

thank you, thank you! I knew about EFT from when I

was in LA but I now know so much more and I had

ah-ha moments almost every day!  Especially the one

series about Highly Sensitive People- which I found

out I am and have been beating myself up about it

forever!  Now I know how to tap for it and realize its

a blessing to be so connected to my feelings and intuition!

“I loved, loved, loved the whole series! you are so

kind to put all of this information out there and for

free- I know this is huge for me and for the world! I

can sense huge changes a-brewing! I kinda miss it

already! Tell Jessica I am doing the 40 day challenge…

this is exciting…who knows where I will be in 40 days!

Thank you again!”?~ Love, Christine en route to New York City, NY USA

So What’s the Secret?

Tomorrow is election day in the United States.  It is a mid-term election, which often gets short shrift in the attention of the voters.  If we are to believe the newscasters and pundits (yes, a big “IF,” it’s true) this one may have more than the usual turnout.

Years ago, Dr. Andrew Weil suggested as a part of his 8 Days to Better Health, that we stop watching and reading the news in order to reduce stress levels.  Advice that I took to heart.  Although I listen to NPR regularly, I rarely see network news because I find the “facts” delivered in short sound bites interspersed with even longer advertising to be really annoying. And there seems no shortage of awful and alarming news.  Often I notice that even the weather is portrayed as awful and alarming!

A few years ago we were treated to a teaser for the road to a better life with a book and movie called The Secret. I call it a teaser because although it was about the Law of Attraction, which is a big paradigm change for most of us, it seemed to leave a lot out.  For practical use of the LOA in changing your life, it remained largely a secret.

It seems to me that one of the most basic and important steps to attracting results that you desire into your life, is to learn to observe your own thoughts and feelings and to shift them away from all the bad, alarming focus that makes you miserable and keeps you stuck, to desirable ones.

It is easy to slide back into our negative, well habituated ways of thinking and behaving.  After all we’ve had years to establish these patterns, and when stressed they become our “default” mode.  And if we are thinking and doing the same old thing, we are of course going to get the same old results.

There is good news though.  The brain has much greater plasticity or ability to change than you know.  We can build new neuropathways that lead to new and better results.

There are some great resources to help you do this.  I have reviewed some of them and will continue to tell you about resources that come from credible people.  One that recently came to my attention is a DVD series taught by Bob Proctor and Mary Morrissey.  They are both writers and speakers who have years of experience using and teaching the tenants of the Law of Attraction.

If you find yourself going back to old, familiar negative patterns, check this out.  And even if you are pessimistic that there even IS a secret to getting the results you desire, you owe it to yourself to do a little
more reading.

I highly recommend this product, and you can read and hear more reviews and recommendations at this site:

Oh, and by the way, even if you doubt that you make a difference, go vote anyway!
