So What’s the Secret?

Tomorrow is election day in the United States.  It is a mid-term election, which often gets short shrift in the attention of the voters.  If we are to believe the newscasters and pundits (yes, a big “IF,” it’s true) this one may have more than the usual turnout.

Years ago, Dr. Andrew Weil suggested as a part of his 8 Days to Better Health, that we stop watching and reading the news in order to reduce stress levels.  Advice that I took to heart.  Although I listen to NPR regularly, I rarely see network news because I find the “facts” delivered in short sound bites interspersed with even longer advertising to be really annoying. And there seems no shortage of awful and alarming news.  Often I notice that even the weather is portrayed as awful and alarming!

A few years ago we were treated to a teaser for the road to a better life with a book and movie called The Secret. I call it a teaser because although it was about the Law of Attraction, which is a big paradigm change for most of us, it seemed to leave a lot out.  For practical use of the LOA in changing your life, it remained largely a secret.

It seems to me that one of the most basic and important steps to attracting results that you desire into your life, is to learn to observe your own thoughts and feelings and to shift them away from all the bad, alarming focus that makes you miserable and keeps you stuck, to desirable ones.

It is easy to slide back into our negative, well habituated ways of thinking and behaving.  After all we’ve had years to establish these patterns, and when stressed they become our “default” mode.  And if we are thinking and doing the same old thing, we are of course going to get the same old results.

There is good news though.  The brain has much greater plasticity or ability to change than you know.  We can build new neuropathways that lead to new and better results.

There are some great resources to help you do this.  I have reviewed some of them and will continue to tell you about resources that come from credible people.  One that recently came to my attention is a DVD series taught by Bob Proctor and Mary Morrissey.  They are both writers and speakers who have years of experience using and teaching the tenants of the Law of Attraction.

If you find yourself going back to old, familiar negative patterns, check this out.  And even if you are pessimistic that there even IS a secret to getting the results you desire, you owe it to yourself to do a little
more reading.

I highly recommend this product, and you can read and hear more reviews and recommendations at this site:

The Challenge of Gratitude

“The hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings.”  ~Eric Hoffer~

This morning while I was working on a segment of Meridian Tapping I was reminded of something that seems very easy to forget.  These days there are plenty of reminders that we should be afraid of a lack of money.  And lots of people are preoccupied with job shortages and the losses and potential losses that go with that.

In addition to the seemingly endless flow of scary sound bites that comprises most network news, most of us have scarcity messages from childhood that our well-meaning parents imparted that still influence our beliefs and thought processes.

All of this negativity is counter-productive to our attempts to set and reach ambitious goals that stretch our limits.  And in terms of the Law of Attraction, we are indeed vibrating at a low frequency, and sending out messages that we don’t expect much in the way of returns for our efforts.

And since we tend to get what we expect, if we are focused on scarcity and feeling discouraged and worried, then chances are we will get exactly that: not much.

By contrast, gratitude is a high vibration emotion which lifts us up and conveys a much better message and attitude.  The challenge is to keep focused on what IS present as opposed to what is NOT.  When you get paid, do you say thanks for the amount you deposit in your account?  Do you write down the number and celebrate?

What struck me is that it is much easier (if you have a scarcity habit) to express fear that it just isn’t enough.  It is easy to just slide down that habitual road to anxiety and helplessness because it is such a well traveled road.

Here is where it is really helpful to make use of tools to help you change those neuropathways and make use of what we know now to be true: we can replace them not with “positive thinking” but by clinical hypnotism and meridian tapping (as well as psychotherapy).  We must remove those blocking beliefs and reframe with beliefs that serve us.

The Power of Gratitude

White Iris

It may seem to be a paradox that we work on meeting goals in order to change lives and at the same time aim to be happy and contented now.  Look ahead to the life we intend to create, while being mindful and present to where we are right now.

It is easy to fall into the trap of complaint, criticism and discontent when we compare where we are with where we wish to be.  I was listening to John talk about the financial mess that he faced in the aftermath of a bad relationship.  He was looking at a large credit card debt that he and his girlfriend had accumulated as well as loans that he had given her which he would likely never see returned.

It was quite a pile of rubble that was left from the choices that he had made, and he sorely regretted having made them.  He was going to have to take some drastic measures to prevent even further losses since paying his mortgage and a car payment was difficult.  And the creditors were calling.

As you might expect, he was feeling sad, angry and afraid.  And it didn’t help that he was continually berating himself for being so stupid as to have gotten into the situation.  He was deeply ashamed.

You might wonder if John would have to wait to feel better until after he had met his goals of cleaning up his debt and getting back on his feet again.  The answer is no.  And if he continues to berate himself and cause more internal negativity, achieving anything is going to be extremely difficult, if not impossible.

Here is where the power of gratitude comes in.  Paying attention to what is going right in your life makes all the difference.  And yes, no matter how huge the pile of rubble from the past is, there are things to be grateful for.  This may sound too optimistic to be believed, but bear with me.

If you are willing to be mindful of what is present to you NOW, you may notice small but important things that you have tuned out as you worry and stew.  It may be the beauty of nature, or the existence of your life and health.  Perhaps the kindness of someone you encounter, or some quality within you that you appreciate.  If you look and are willing to ask, there is help at hand, and we can always be grateful for that.

The “first aid” assignment that I gave John was to write a gratitude list every day, preferably at the beginning and end of the day.  After awakening, he was asked to think about those things and to breathe deeply and to FEEL gratitude.  He could observe that he felt more energetic and happy and that getting on with the tasks of the day was much easier.

This has been a spiritual discipline of mine for many years, and I recommend it to you.  Something simple yet powerful, expressing gratitude shifts our thoughts to the positive.  And since we become what we think about most, and bring into being what our thoughts are focused on, it can be a small step that will change your life.
